Here's a view of the serial cable connector that comes with the 396 and the end of a Belkin USB->serial adapter that it plugs in to for ben46158.
Uniden is a very customer oriented company - when people complained about having to determine timing for fire tone-outs, Uniden modified the firmware to allow us to enter just the tones - no timing information needed.   When it was determined that some fire departments send the tone-out with CTCSS turned on, and that the scanner couldn't detect the tone-out tone if it was too close to the CTCSS tone, Uniden again modified the firmware.

Therein lies a problem - the new firmware, 1.08.07, causes problems with some P25 systems.  Some people report that the "machine-gunning" (which some people never hear) gets worse with 1.08.07 firmware.  The easy solution is to "downgrade" back to the 1.07.01 version of the firmware, at least until Uniden fixes the fix.  But ...

Some people didn't save the 1.07.01 upgrade, and Uniden no longer has it available for download on their site, so I'm making it available here.  Just download this zip file, extract the loader and the firmware file and downgrade your scanner to 1.07.01.  Or upgrade to 1.09.00, which is now available at Uniden's site.

Since Uniden's new (as of mid-December, 2005) site seems to be having download problems, I've posted the current updater program and the latest firmware image.
(Make sure your browser doesn't change the file names - the updater is an .exe file and the image is an .scn file.  If your browser changes them, change them back.  Neither one is a .zip file.)

If your browser shows you a page of numbers for the firmware image, right-click on the link and choose "Save Target As ..." and save it as BCD396T_V1_09_00.scn

There have been reports of the update not working if the two files aren't in the same folder, or if they're buried too far down in folders, so save them to C:\ (or D:\ or whichever drive you like) and run them from there.

If the upload doesn't "take", and the scanner seems to be hung up, don't panic.  It's waiting for the upload.  Just try again, making sure that you're using the correct file.

Do you want an easy way to take the data from the Radio Reference database (please contribute to Radio Reference - it's the best resource we have on the internet) and put it into .usd format?  Check out Keith's page.  Just create the file, save it in your BCD396T\UASD_systems folder and the next time you run UASD the system will be in your list of systems.

The instructions for using this page are at http://www.kb8soe.com/396/uasdinst.php.   Please read them.  Pay particular attention to #6.

Thanks, Keith.
